As regular readers of my blog know, over the past few weeks, I have concentrated on the revitalization of the Brentler Heights waterfront district by developer and former architect David Greeley. — [1] —. By far, the most impressive result of this program is the renovation of a former industrial building on Paxton Street. The building’s first floor now houses a popular coffee shop and bookstore, and its beautifully landscaped gardens include creative metal sculptures. — [2] —. I am pleased to report that the second floor will be occupied by the Brentler Heights Gallery.

The gallery will be run by Francine Skandar, a Brentler Heights artist I met years ago at a jewelry-making workshop. I always admired her work, and I obtained many of her creations to sell at my shop. I was delighted to learn that she will be managing this high-profile gallery. On a media tour, Ms. Skandar highlighted how Mr. Greeley retained nearly all of the Paxton Street building’s original features to give it a vintage character. — [3] —. This makes it an ideal backdrop for all types of art.

My last article about East Core Park attracted quite a few online comments. The comments were from residents complaining about overgrown weeds and fallen branches on the Blue Trail. They say the Red Trail is in good condition, but maintenance issues have persisted on the Blue Trail for quite some time.

As the newest member of the city council, you might not have heard many complaints yet. However, if you do get briefings regarding the situation, I would be grateful for any updates you can pass along. I reached out to parks commissioner Oscar Lunes for comments about this, but he hasn’t responded. Someone mentioned he might be busy preparing for retirement.

City Parks Department Launches Volunteer Initiative

Hale City (July 12)—In response to residents’ concerns about conditions on the hiking paths at East Core Park, the Hale City Parks Department offers an explanation and an outline of its plans for trail upkeep.

“Trail maintenance is transitioning from being performed by city employees to an all-volunteer model,” said newly appointed parks commissioner Helen Yancey. “Before my predecessor stepped down after twenty years of service to the city, he began this shift. The result was a temporary suspension of maintenance on the Blue Trail.”

Ms. Yancey added that the volunteer model will save money and allow residents greater involvement with the park system. Accordingly, the Hale City Parks Department has scheduled its first volunteer cleanup event, Trail Cleanup Day, on August 12, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The Hale City Parks Department’s inaugural Trail Cleanup Day, held on August 8, was a great success. An enthusiastic group of volunteers cleared debris and weeds from the Blue Trail at East Core Park and had the path clean and usable just before noon on the bright, warm day.

Keep in mind that photographs, paintings, and drawings are the most popular mediums. However, one local artist donated a large sculpture, which will be the auction’s centerpiece. Apart from that piece, we will only accept sculptures under 50 centimeters tall.
